Training Seasons

As it currently stands it may be against the law to train your dog in the state of South Carolina after March 1st and before October 1st even if you are on private land. We need to do something to change this as there are no laws stated in black and white that pertain to us as squirrel hunters. The current bill H 4756 in the legislature is only for three counties which are all located in the Pee Dee area. We need to contact our Representatives before it is too late.

Now if you walk your dog on WMA property then you are guilty of running dogs out of season no matter your reason for being there. They apparently can cite you despite the fact that you may be simply scouting for deer or squirrel for the next season. Ludacrious as that may seem it can happen. I know.

I am not bashing our wildlife enforcement officers as I know they do a great job in protecting our wildlife and doing what they think is the right thing to do most of the time. I am simply saying that we as hunters need to get together and contact our representatives about this matter before there is a clear cut decision one way or the other.

Personally I do not think it is right for coon hunters, fox hunters, and other hunters to have a running season while we are excluded. I also do not think it right for a game warden to ticket a man for walking his dog and his dog treeing while he is scouting a new area to guide a cast on next year, but that is just my opinion.

Again all of this is my opinion and might not matter to any of you who read this site, but don't complain about having to get rid of your dogs because you can't train them any longer. If you want to continue in this sport then you must do something.........contact your legislature and let it be known how you feel and how this could threaten your squirrel dog training and hunting! Just remember what the clubs in NC have to use at their treeing contests! We may not be far behind at all!

Please visit this page and email your representative before the current legislative session ends in June. I am providing the link to the home page below. You can go to bio section and it will give you the representatives names, their email addresses, and telephone numbers. Please contact them and let your feelings be known!
